Always keep advertising relevant!

One of the reasons for the success of Google AdSense is its relative effectiveness at understanding the content of your site and showing ads relevant to your site’s theme.

If you want to make money from your website it is essential that you ensure your advertising is always relevant and appropriate for your audience.

Why advertising should be relevant to your content

Make advertising relevantPeople come to your website for your content, pure and simple. They do not come to your site to see your latest monetisation attempts or your newest and greatest banner ads.

Visitors are attracted to your content and return to devour fresh content that is interesting and relevant to them.

If your advertising is not relevant to your site’s content, people will be far less interested in the messages your advertisers are trying to get across. Sure, some of your visitors may click through out of curiosity or because they have wide-ranging interests. Why take this risk, though?

Why advertising should be appropriate to your audience

Advertising should be interesting to your audienceYou should know your audience better than anyone. You should know what their interests are, and you should be aware of their general demographics.

You should already be catering to your audience through your site content – you choice of advertising should be no different. By ensuring your advertising is relevant to your audience, you are increasing the chances of them taking an interest in your advertising, clicking through and making you money.

Consider your advertising carefully

Running ads that are irrelevant to your audience and content is a waste. Ads can be distracting to your content – you need to ensure that if you publish them, they are complementary to your website.

If you are struggling to think of related subjects for your website, try Google’s Keyword Tool – enter the main keywords for your site and see what related keywords Google suggests. You can then consider publishing advertising based on the suggested subject areas.

I find that dating websites work particularly well for many online communities – people join communities to interact with other people and dating websites also attract those looking to interact with others. Just Chat earns a good proportion of its revenue through dating affiliate programs.

Never make the mistake of publishing irrelevant advertising on your site. Keep your ads targeted to your audience and your content – you will achieve far better results, far better revenue, and far happier visitors as a result.

I think that the hardest thing to do for any website is to try and promote it cheaply and effectivly. That is why Google adwords and adsense is good. It makes sure that the ads shown are relevant and therefore are beneficial for both the advertisers and the website owners.

Russ – Thanks for your comment. This article was talking about advertising from the publisher viewpoint, although I agree that all promotion requires careful thought and consideration. The key of course, is to always ensure you maintain relevancy.

You know, I’ve checked these tools out before, but I decided I didn’t have enough traffic to start using them. Maybe I should reconsider…

Daniel – It’s always worth experimenting and trying things out; after all you never really know how things will work until you do!

I’ve had a few websites where i have tested various advertising methods and nothing i’ve found comes close to adsense. Plus its so easy to slap on the script and let google find the relevant ads instead of doing all the research and finding them yourself in the hope that it will be as good.

Alternative Clothing – Thanks for your comment. Google can be a very effective method for generating revenue on your site, but it is not always the best way.

Have you tried private advertising by approaching sites that are highly relevant to your own? I am confident that more revenue can be generated this way compared to sticking up AdSense and relying on Google.

Very useful article. It has been quite awhile since I last looked at the Google keyword tool. I’m in the process of going from ecommerce to adsense because frankly I enjoy writing articles, travelling, and there’s more freedom opposed to being chained to an office every day.

I will most certainly keep this site bookmarked. Great job!
