There will always be a mystery around the exact working of the PageRank algorithm - after all, if we all knew exactly how it worked the search results would be full of affiliate and made for AdSense sites. I am pretty sure if you keep on the path you are on at the moment and keep generating great content, your efforts will be further rewarded by the search engines (remember too, that there are search engines other than Google!).
