Just a note to say that I'm enjoying reading your blog... and that I find the external links useful - it certainly beats 'stumbling' around till I find them by chance.

That's very true, Cell. With such a wide audience, not every article you write will be relevant to each and every visitor.

I try to post one new article a day, and have kept to this target since starting the blog (apart from one missed day on Friday when the beer garden beckoned!).

The one I pay the most attention to is posting frequency. Not every post you write is gonna be amazing. Not every post you think is amazing will resonate with your readers … I did one of each last week …

Smiley - What Google does and doesn't do is often a mystery; although there is evidence to suggest Google is moving to stop counting paid links in its algorithm.

Daniel - The site sure is interesting; I wonder if Google are happy with the look and implied endorsement? Anything that raises money for charity should be encouraged.

Nate - I am more than happy to link to valuable articles! Keep up the good work with your blog :)

I asked Gary about it, and it's just a personal pledge of his, not a formal deal with Google and the American Cross.

I'm taking his word on it (probably not a good thing for me to do anyway) but either way, the site looks pretty cool.

Exactly, Martin – I’m very weary when it comes to charity over the internet. Infact, I think the only time I’ve given money towards charity over the internet is when I donated on JC.

And even then – you used a third party site to ensure people knew it was genuine.

And my goals for purchasing links is for link popularity. We’ve spent a lot of money on the site and I don’t believe in spamming.

It’s cost us £50 a day on Google Adwords and it’s cost an arm and a leg, we really need to start being found through conventional means. Simply by people searching on search engines.

We’re currently being found through Yahoo, MSN & Google through people searching for “Good Chat”, “Good Chat Rooms”, “Free Chat”, “Free friendly chatrooms” – but that’s just about it. As you know, all the other keywords are highly competitive

We’re getting there, but it’s still difficult. I read that link popularity plays a big part in search engine rankings, thus bought a few links using backlinks.com – not too many, so it won’t look suspicious to engines, but enough to suddenly boost our PR ranking from “unranked” ro “PR 4″ in under 2 weeks !!

We’ve now gone from 300ish unique visitors per day to 800ish unique visitors per day. Only a minority of that make it into the rooms so I’m still working on optimizing the frontpage. But as far as visitations are concerned – the links have DEFINITELY worked.

Community sites are a highly competitive area of the internet, quite frankly I haven’t got a reply from any sites I’ve e-mailed requesting a link exchange or a helping hand from – thus paid links were the only option.

I do think they are a bit of a grey area though. I also read that Google often penalises sites for paying for links?

Hi Daniel - Google Shadow looks interesting; how do we know for sure that revenue is actually donated to charity though? I couldn't find any evidence on the site, which makes me hesitant in recommending it.

Gary Lee puts out a lot of useful things on his site. Have you checked out Google Shadow yet?
