Great post, Martin! The blog seesaw is a very real issue and I’ve recently started keeping an “ongoing list” of ideas and interests to draw from on days when I need some type of writing inspiration or motivation.

Andy - Thanks for your great example! I experience the same thing; sometimes I spend hours on my blog during a single day and wonder why I invest so much time into it. I soon see the benefits when new business contacts get in touch, or I read great ideas from my readers, though!

Nicole - Sometimes I too, come up with great blogging ideas when I am not even thinking about my blog! In these cases, I write down my idea so that when it comes time to write, I have immediate inspiration. You are right that when we get these brainwaves, we become amazingly enthusiastic and want to get writing ASAP!

Mr Woc - Yes, blogging definitely became more natural for me once I moved away from a self-imposed schedule. This doesn't work for everyone though; some people need to have a strict schedule in order to be productive.

Hi there

I agree nicole, sometimes its best to just take a break from your blogging, you can try too hard sometimes, once you get out of the regimented way of saying im going to blog every day, you will find that blogging comes more naturally from other subjects you might be reasearching.

So I think you make a valid point and I dont really think its luck, its just common sense.

Martin, when i am completely out of ideas, i try to do or read something completely unrelated and don't try too hard to come up with a new idea, it kind of comes from nowhere. Then i cant wait to write a post, so motivation follows naturally. Perhaps I am lucky?

Defenitely a seesaw. My wife and I spend a ton of time on our blog. We don't always realize the benefit at the time. Some times we get down about the amount of spent. Then a client will find our work and it makes it worth it. Or a client will leave a comment about some of the work we have created for them and make it worth it. Good post

Jordan - I do the same; having an 'ideas' file can really help on the days when motivation seems to have deserted you!

Ramana - I bet some people will argue that they never have a problem coming up with new ideas for blog articles. I suspect they aren't being completely truthful, though!

Woc - You make a good point; it is all too easy to post content just for the sake of posting content, but this is a mistake. You need to ensure that you only post articles that are of good quality. If you begin posting chaff, you readers will soon catch on and go find other blogs to read that may not post regularly, but post real quality when they do. You should always choose quality over quantity, in my opinion.

Simon - What a great idea! There is nothing more motivating than realising that even the most successful bloggers were in the same position as you at some point in time. Indeed, you don't even need to use the WayBack Machine for this - just go searching through their archives.

Smiley - Thanks! Glad you find the blog valuable. It's hard work keeping it going, but highly rewarding at the same time.

Fuller Figure - Ha, yeah I like coining my own terms for things. In this case, I thought the idea of a 'blogging seesaw' was very apt as blogging definitely has its 'ups and downs'.

Nicole - How did you cope with the times when you were dry on ideas and suffering from a lack of motivation?

Cody - Dido? What has she got to do with my articles?!? I assume you mean ditto, in which case I thank you! ;)

Eva - Ha, what a good comparison! I like it!

When u just start a blog it can be exciting and you will blog all the more. Its the same as any other relationship that you begin. As time goes by the excitement wears off and you get more into routine and stop posting all that much.
