In many online communities the new guys ask questions, and more advanced users answer them. If we want to keep beginning and intermediate users more engaged, we need them to change from asker to answerer much earlier. In other words, by forcing participants to be quite nice to newbies, beginners feel safe posing questions. That is important in many communities.

Hello Martin,

This may not be what you are looking for, but I would like to see a discussion about the types of people who use online communites and what their needs are. I am creating a new niche site trying to fill a need that I think exists in the glbt community. However, if the site does not fill users needs then they won't use the site. I have used myspace and facebook, but they didn't fill the need I have when wanting to connect with other on the local level.....as a result, I decided to create my site.

I know the simple answer is that users want to stay connected with other. But I think there is more specific things that people are looking for.

I think the monetary side of things will come if you have the rest. But that is also a good topic to discuss as well.

I don't know....just my two cents.

I see it as a challenge that some internet community userns might change to use places like facebook or myspace for networking/forum etc - instead of different smaller community sites around.

Does people see this as a problem, and if yes in what ways can it be adressed.

I'd like to know how a community site can be made into a good source of income while maintaining good quality standards. Ideas apart from regular stuff like Adsense.

I never knew about the south by southwest Interactive Festival!! Sounds like something I would like to be a part of. I would love to see if we could get some info about less expensive forms of advertising and monetizing my blog!!

Monetizing your blog! Of course, this can include a number of off-shoots. Adsense, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts...

I would, primarily as a blog reader, like to see discussed the question of how content can be improved. That is a vast topic i would imagine, and aspects such as originality, universal versus niche appeal, being current etc could be considered.
