3rd March, 2007 | Community Development | By Martin Reed - Community Manager

Welcome!

After eight years of fooling around online, I have decided to jump on the blogging bandwagon.

Back in 2000, I established www.justchat.co.uk which has since developed into one of the UK’s most popular online communities.

Some people consider online communities to be one of the easiest websites to setup and develop as most of the content is user-generated. Whilst this may be true to some extent, developing them up to the point where they reach ‘critical mass’ is extremely difficult.

Of course, the first thing a community needs is people. Once we get the people, we need to encourage interaction and user retention. Once this is achieved, we need to ‘keep the peace’ to ensure the community does not deteriorate into a place of abuse and flame-wars.

In this blog, I hope to share much of what I have learnt in developing online communities. I will also post my general ramblings and thoughts about developments taking place on the World Wide Web.

I am sure it will be a fascinating journey, and hope you can join me on it!
